December Most Valuable Teacher of the Month presented by WGU Ohio

The Canton Charge, powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, are excited to announce this year's first winner of the Most Valuable Teacher of the Month presented by WGU Ohio is Seth Goshorn from Charles L. Warstler Elementary School.

Mr. Goshorn is a 2nd grade teacher and goes above and beyond the call of duty to help families in our community. It is a part of who Seth to be involved involved in the community. He has helped with the community feeding programs and is a coach for our Little Eagles Basketball Program. He not only is involved within the district as a football coach, but has also has lead after-school reading enrichment classes.

Following the announcement, Mr. Goshorn took a moment to reflect on what he enjoys about teaching and how the pandemic has just continued to help him grow.

1. How have you been adapting to teaching in a new way during these times and continuing to connect with the students?

One of the ways that I have been adapting my teaching during these times is by using Google classroom and other online tools to help better engage my students and keep them prepared incase we would go remote. Also, it is very cool to see the students become familiar with how to operate a Chromebook and do research at such a young age!

2. What has been the most meaningful moment in your teaching career?

The most meaningful moment in my teaching career so far has been seeing former students/athletes or their parents and them telling me how their son or daughter still talks about my class or how much they enjoyed having me as a teacher. It is a great feeling and it is nice knowing that I am leaving my mark in these kiddos lives.

3. What is something you look forward to doing with your students every year?

I always look forward to getting to know each student and learn about what they like doing inside and outside of school. I enjoy coaching them in sports and going to watch them do extracurriculars! Also, I enjoy doing a "Passion project" with them each year, this is when they get to pick a topic they are passionate about and research it and write about it.  I love seeing them get excited about sharing what they learned with the class!

4. What is a way that has stood out in which you were supported or learned from your fellow teachers and how important is that support system especially in these times?

This year has been a challenge for everyone, but thankfully I am surrounded with the best support system at Warstler. My teaching partner Erin is awesome and we have a saying that we live by and that's "You say dance, and we say how high." We just find ways to make it happen each day and she has been so instrumental in my growth over the years! It is truly amazing what I have seen teachers be able to pull off this year and I am so proud to call myself a teacher. Also, Brett Yeagley and Carole Meiroff were the two teachers I had growing up that truly made me feel special and inspired me to become a teacher. Without them, none of this would be possible. Lastly, I would like to thank my mother for always believing in me and pushing me to be great.
