New city? Check. New name? Check? New coach? Check. I can go on and on when looking ahead to the 2021/2022 NBA G League season, which tips off this Saturday from the new home of the Cleveland Charge, the Wolstein Center on the campus of Cleveland State University in downtown Cleveland. Located a couple blocks from Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, the move brings a connectivity to the two franchises that was lacking the past 10 seasons.
You want more “new?” Well, there’s lots of new coaches around the league ( 23 to be exact, 23! ), a few new teams
( Motor City Cruise / Birmingham Squadron / Mexico City Capitanes ), a new team nickname ( Maine Red Claws are now the Maine Celtics ) and if that’s not enough, how about a new schedule format that will see a new 14 game Winter Showcase Cup leading up to the Christmas holiday ,followed by a standard 36 game regular season leading into the playoffs. All that adds up to what promises to be a fun first season for the Charge in Cleveland.
New head coach Dan Geriot steps in as the 5th head coach in team history, replacing Nate Reinking who was promoted to a Cavs assistant after his time in Canton. With a non-stop smile, energy to spare and optimism to boot, Geriot was promoted to head man after 6 seasons with the Cavaliers in a variety of roles.
As for the roster? New as well. Only one player returns from last years team, while both Cavalier 2 way players are, you guessed it, new.
So there you have it, new being the operative word to describe the upcoming Cleveland Charge 2021 / 2022 NBA G League season.
Will you be a part of the new?
